This course trains lay responders to overcome reluctance to act in emergency situations and to recognize and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants. It provides the knowledge and skills necessary in an emergency to help sustain life and to minimize pain and the consequences of injury or sudden illness until professional medical help arrives. Course includes caring for a conscious or unconscious person, responding to breathing and cardiac emergencies, treating common injuries, responding to common illnesses and more. Individuals successfully completing this course meet the requirements for a “First Aider” in the Girl Scout setting.

American Red Cross Lay Responder First Aid, CPR/AED Instructor

COST: $75. Includes Lay Responder Instructors Manual, Participant Manual, Certification Cards and overnight housing for those who choose to stay over.

Make a difference in your Service Unit and Community—become a CPR/First Aid Instructor! Every CPR/First Aid instructor can go back to their local Service Unit and offer courses for Troop Leaders and other Volunteers. Service Units: Send one or two individuals and have the convenience of your own local instructor!
This course trains instructor candidates to teach basic level American Red Cross First Aid, CPR and AED courses for lay responders. Upon conclusion of this course, candidates should be able to demonstrate the characteristics required of an American Red Cross representative and role model, teach courses in a manner that helps participants stay engaged in the learning process, demonstrate applicable first aid, CPR and AED skills at an appropriate level of performance, maintain complete and accurate records and reports, plan, organize and conduct the first aid, CPR and AED courses in accordance with the requirements of the specific program they will be teaching, evaluate participants, monitor participants’ practice, and provide corrective feedback and encouragement consistent with the critical skill performance steps.
