Adult Education and Enrichment

Adult Volunteers are the essential keys of Leadership for our girls!

The Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council is committed to fully preparing and supporting the women and men who volunteer their time to help girls become the best Leaders they can be. Teen girls 14 and older are welcome to attend all training courses! They may take First Aide and Camp Basics, but cannot serve as the first-aider or camp trained person for Troop until they are registered as an adult.

Orientation to Girl Scouts by GSUSA

Become acquainted with Girl Scouts through this stimulating and interactive resource. There are both English and Spanish versions. This engaging session will set the foundation for:
• Introduction and Welcome: instructions on how to navigate the orientation
• About Girl Scouts: Girl Scout Mission, Promise and Law, history, and membership requirements
• Girl Scout Pathways: illustrates various ways that members participate
• Support for Volunteers: resources and support available to volunteers
• Program: the three keys to Leadership: discover – connect – take action, and their outcomes
• Learning Log and Conclusion: for learners to answer questions and be thanked

Access to the Orientation: All volunteers can access the GSUSA online Volunteer Orientation at http://training.girlscouts.org. The site requires a password—the current assigned password is: discover.

Service Unit Basics

Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Service Unit Basics is available through your Service Unit—contact your Service Unit Manager (SUM) or a Membership Team Member. Service Unit Basics provides new adult volunteers with their personal toolkit to have fun and start the adventure of Girl Scouting! New volunteers will discover both the traditions and the new trends in Girl Scouting, as well as forms, policies and procedures that support the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Service Unit Basics is one of the first steps in education and is followed by further learning in Girl Scout Leadership Essentials and Grade-level education.

Leadership Essentials

Leadership Essentials is the National Module that will help prepare volunteers to effectively facilitate the “Girl Scout Leadership Experience.” This course offers flexibility, so it can be used with a group of volunteers who are partnering with girls of the same grade level, same pathway, or mixed groups, different grade levels, different pathways. As the name suggests the focus in on the Essentials of effectively facilitating the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

Learning Objectives:
• Explain the meaning of the three keys of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.
• Demonstrate how to use the resources to support the delivery of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, including the Journeys with accompanying Adult Guides.
• Describe how to facilitate activities so they are girl led, cooperative learning by doing.
• Convey the value of being purposeful in one’s leadership.

Attendance for the entire session is important!

Grade Level Education

Pre-requisite: GSCB Service Unit Basics, GSUSA Orientation and Leadership Essentials


The workshops provide volunteers working with girls instruction on organizing and facilitating program activities for a specific age level. Topics include age level characteristics and special developmental needs, how to use age specific resources and Journey books, types of group government to use, how to infuse girl centric planning, and appropriate age level activities, ceremonies and traditions.

Daisy Leaders
This course is designed for volunteers working with girls in grades K - 1

Brownie Leaders
This course is designed for volunteers working with girls in grades 2-3

Junior Leaders
This course is designed for volunteers working with girls in grades 4-5

Cadette Leaders
This course is designed for volunteers working with girls in grades 6-8

Senior/Ambassador Leaders
This course is designed for volunteers working with girls in grades 9-12

Outdoor Education

Camping Basics I or II
Both Camping Basics I and II cover all the skills you will need to take your girls on an outdoor trip including: planning, packing, cooking, fire building, care of camp site and equipment, and outdoor program ideas. The “Only Difference” between these two trainings is that Camping Basics I only requires one night and Camp Basics II requires two nights. You must attend all hours scheduled in a particular course or you will not receive credit for taking the course. Directions to the sites will be sent with your confirmation.

COST: $30, includes food, training materials and patch. All activities take place rain, snow or shine. Please come prepared for outdoor activities. You will need ponchos for rain and heavy coats, gloves and boots for winter courses. Courses in winter will have indoor heated accommodations.

NOTE: Smoking at camps is limited to fire circles only. Please do not smoke outside buildings.

Adults who have previously taken Outdoor Training with a Girl Scout Council, Boy Scouts, or another youth serving organization, may submit a camp exemption form in lieu of taking Camping Basics.
The exemption form will be reviewed at GSCB and you will be notified of its acceptability. This exemption form is available in written form and online. If you are interested in this option please call the Volunteer Department at 800-341-4007 ext. 7180 or email them at volunteerservices@cbgsc.org.

Troop Camp Training
Camping Basics Training with your Brownie or Junior Troop

Looking for a few daring Troop/Group Leaders and their girls who want to learn how to camp together. This course will teach you all the skills you need to take your girls and go on an outdoor trip including: planning, packing, cooking, fire building and care of your campsite and equipment. Plus, it will give you outdoor program ideas. Adults will earn the Camping Basics Certification.

Brownie and Junior Troops
WHEN: 8:45 am Saturday – 4 pm Sunday
COST: $30 per adult, $15 per girl, includes materials meals and a patch.

NOTES: Dress for the weather. Training happens rain, snow or shine. Packing list will be provided upon registration. Min. 15/Max. 30 each date

First Aid & CPR

Safety-Wise defines a first-aider as an adult who has taken GSCB-approved first aid and CPR training. First-aiders are needed for physically demanding activities and other activities involving potential for injury. First-aiders must keep their training up-to-date as required by the sponsoring organization. Please check the activity checkpoints for specific activities.
