Camping Orientation/Outdoor Skills: Basic

WHO: Troop Leaders, other Troop Volunteers, Ambassadors, and Parents
All dates Friday 7 pm to Sunday 12 pm

COST: $30. Includes two nights lodging, five meals, materials, and a whole set of cool and useful skills.
NOTE: Three of the weekends are available as Leader-Daughter Registrations. Girls must be at least in 4th Grade to attend, two girls per adult maximum.

This combination weekend includes BOTH “Camping Orientation” and “Outdoor Skills: Basic.” This is a great way to learn how to prepare for an overnight experience in the great outdoors! Absolutely no experience in camping or the outdoors needed.

Camping Orientation: This course covers the basics of taking your Troop/Group on an overnight Girl Scouting trip. Girl Planning, Menus, Budgeting, Risk Management, Forms and Permissions and Packing. Learn tips and tricks such as the use of the patrol system, camp kapers, progression in the out-of-doors and more. This session also includes an overview of all the Council-owned rental facilities and fire safety/fire building. This is the course you need to take your Troop/group on an overnight trip staying in a modern building at camp or elsewhere.

Outdoor Skills: Basic: You’ll learn how to do and how to teach: A-Frame Fire Building, Preparing Charcoal, Propane Stove Usage, Making and Using Fire Starters, Basic Outdoor Cooking Methods, Outdoor Sanitization, Pocket Knife Safety, Basic Knot Tying, Fun Hikes, Trail Signs, Orienteering, Principles of Leave No Trace, Tent Pitching, Platform Tent Care, Primitive Camping, Camping in a Tent/Adirondack Unit, Camping in a Building and Outdoor Flag Ceremonies. This is the course you need to take your Troop/group on an overnight trip to an established camp or campsite.

Camping Orientation/Outdoor Skills: Basic for Troops

WHO: Troop Leaders, Adult Volunteers, Junior Girls and up
WHEN: No pre-scheduled dates. This program is available On-Demand. Saturday 9 am to Sunday 3 pm
WHERE: Camp Grove Point
COST: $30 per person. Includes four meals, materials, and a whole set of cool and useful skills! *Building/unit rental is not included and must be arranged separately.
NOTE:
1.Girls must be at least of Junior Grade Level.
2.Troop must bring at least one adult for every three girls. Adults must be prepared to assist and participate fully with girls throughout the weekend.
3.The total number of participants must be 24 or fewer.
4.Five hours of the weekend are set aside to complete the “Camping Orientation” portion of the training with some of the adults only. The Troop must plan five hours of activities and ensure there are sufficient adults to lead this portion as Facilitators will not be available at that time to lead activities for girls.

This is a fun way to learn about Camping and Outdoor Skills along with your Troop! Qualified trainers experienced in educating both youth and adults will accompany your Troop on your camping trip to one of our Council properties and will work with your group to complete the Camping Orientation and the Outdoor Skills: Basic information throughout your weekend. Adults who successfully complete both portions of the weekend will be qualified to take groups camping in the future.

Outdoor Skills: Advanced

This course provides the opportunity to practice our fun basic outdoor skills, and moves onto the next level. Outdoor Skills- Advanced will include Teepee and Log Cabin Fire Building, Water Purification, Advanced Cooking Methods (More Dutch Oven Uses, Ground Ovens, BakePakers, Cooking with Hot Stones, and Trash Can Turkeys!) Maintaining Cast Iron, Advanced Knot Tying (single-handed bowline, midshipmans/tautline hitch, linemans/butterfly loop, sheepshank, monkey’s fist), Lashing, Backpacking, and Finding your way using Trail Signs, Compasses and GPS units. The course includes an overnight experience minimal impact camping on a primitive site.

WHEN: Saturday 9 am to Sunday 2 pm. No pre-scheduled dates. Available On-Demand.
COST: $45. Includes one night lodging, four meals, materials, and a whole set of cool and useful skills!

Troop Camping and Outdoor Skills Facilitator

WHEN: Two weekends, both Friday 7pm to Sunday 4pm
April 9 – April 11, 2010 (2nd weekend TBD)
WHERE: Camp Grove Point, Earleville, MD
COST: $75. Includes four nights, ten meals and materials.
NOTE: Prerequisites: Troop Camping, Outdoor Skills- Basic and Outdoor Skills- Advanced
If you love the out-of-doors and want to share your skills and your love with youth and adults, this is the course for you! In this course you will:
•Review and practice all the information in Troop Camping, Outdoor Skills- Basic and Outdoor Skills- Advanced to ensure proficiency.
•Become familiar with the materials, tools, resources, teaching methods and curriculum for all three courses. (Troop Camping, Outdoor Skills- Basic, and Outdoor Skills- Advanced)
•Learn and practice teaching methods appropriate for youth, adult and blended classes.
•Set your personal development plan to begin/continue as a Facilitator and/or Lead Facilitator.

Apprentice Activity Facilitator Training

This is one of those GREAT perks of being involved in Girl Scouting! Train as a Facilitator in one or more of our cool outdoor activities and you’ll be able to rent the equipment for very low cost to do programs at camp for your Troop, your Service Unit… even your family and friends. In each of the Facilitator Educational sessions you’ll be oriented to all safety guidelines, use and care of equipment, how to instruct youth and adults in the activity, making the activity fun and safe, and procedures for reserving equipment. After completion of the course, newly trained Facilitators “Apprentice” with more experienced Facilitators to develop skills and comfort level before Facilitating solo. These courses qualify you to train these activities on Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council property using our equipment and curriculum. Facilitator Training Sessions include: Archery, Canoeing, Kayaking, Sailing, Agilent Technology Science Kits, Finding Your Way (Trail Signs, Map and Compass, Geocaching), Team Challenge Course (Low Ropes) Facilitators can train in as many areas as they would like.

COST: $10 per course. Includes one meal.
OR $40 for a full weekend including all courses. Includes one or two nights housing and four meals.
