ONGOING EVENTS FOR TEENS

Maryland Science Center Camp-in

WHO: Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors
WHEN: January - May, Friday or Saturday nights
WHERE: Maryland Science Center
COST: $38.00/per person/due in full with registration. Includes an evening snack and a light breakfast.

An overnight program during the school year (January-May). Check-In starts no sooner than 5:15 p.m., and the program ends by 9:00 a.m. the next day. No minimum or maximum numbers required, but chaperone allowances vary based on number of children in the group. See registration form or website for available dates for Junior Girl Scouts.

Includes three theme-based, hands-on workshops, an IMAX film, a Planetarium show, time to shop in the science store,
and to explore many of the museum’s interactive exhibits.

MARCH 2010

Your Own Business

Are you an independent thinker who loves to generate ideas and find ways to make things happen? If so, you may have the makings of an entrepreneur. An entrepreneur organizes and manages a business. Fashion, sporting goods, catering...the possibilities are endless. Can you think of an entrepreneur who is world famous, maybe Ben and Jerry or Mary Kay? If you would like to start your own business, this interest project workshop is perfect for you.

AGILENT Hands-On Science Programs

Agilent Technologies has generously provided Science Kits to our Council for the past three years. Great resources for Troops, Service Units, and as Leadership activities for older girls. Please join us for this fun hands-on training. You’ll be amazed to see how much fun science can be!

Girl Scout Silver and Gold Award Education Sessions

WHO: Cadettes, Seniors, Ambassadors, Leaders, Advisors
WHEN: March 6, 2010
Girl Scout Gold Award: 9 am – 10:30 am
Girl Scout Silver Award: 1:30 pm – 3 pm
WHERE: The Holly Center, Salisbury, MD

This educational session will help you start planning and preparing for the requirements of the Girl Scout Silver Award or the Girl Scout Gold Award. This class will allow you to walk through the requirements and ask questions. It will familiarize you with the latest information available on these prestigious awards.

American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training

WHO: Ages 11 - 17
WHEN: March 6, 2010, 9 am – 4 pm
WHERE: Newark Resource Center, Newark, DE
COST: $40
NOTE: You must bring a bagged lunch.
This workshop provides girls who are planning to babysit with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly give care for children and infants. Participants learn to develop Leadership skills; develop a babysitting business, keep themselves and others safe and help children behave; and learn about basic child care and basic first aid. Each participant receives a handbook and CD ROM with additional resources!

Women of Distinction Signature Event

WHO:8th grade Cadettes – Ambassadors
WHEN: March 9, 2010, 3 pm – 8:30 pm
WHERE: Hotel du Pont
COST: FREE
NOTE: Max 40 girls by application only
Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council honors a local woman every year at the “Woman of Distinction” dinner. Each year girls from Troops through out the Council volunteer in a variety of ways to make this event successful. Girls serve various positions such as Mistress of Ceremonies, flag ceremony participants, vocal participants and hostesses to guest.
Teen Leadership Applications are due no later than December 14, 2009. You must agree to attend the “Powerful First Impression” workshop
(see page 47), wear a full uniform or dress clothes and a uniform vest/sash. You will need to be dismissed from school early to attend this event. Upon confirmation you will receive a note to your principal to help in arranging this. Please note on application if you will be needing transportation from either Dover, DE or the NRC office.

Stress Less Weekend

WHO:Cadettes, Seniors, Ambassadors and Adult Women
WHEN: March 13, 1 pm – March 14, 2010, 10 am
WHERE: Camp Sandy Pines, Fruitland, MD
COST: $25 per person. Includes snacks, dinner on Saturday, breakfast on Sunday and fun patch.
NOTE: Adult participation is not required but is welcome.
Pamper yourself while learning Nature’s greatest secrets at Sandy Pines. Make a salt and sugar scrub from everyday products, study and practice relaxation and meditation techniques, and learn how you can apply it to your everyday life. You and your girl can come for free if you sign up to help!

GPS for Beginners - Geocaching Scavenger Hunt

WHO:Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, Ambassadors
WHEN: March 14, 2 pm – 4:30 pm
WHERE: Camp Country Center, Hockessin, DE
COST: $8 per girl. Includes equipment, instruction and fun patch.
NOTE: Dress for the outdoors, wear comfortable shoes and bring a snack to share.
Outdoor Scavenger hunters will learn to use GPS units (Global Positioning Systems). Fun, fun, fun while learning the technology used in this new sport and the adventure of searching for hidden prizes.

COST: FREE.
Girl Scout Gold Award Proposals for the 2009 – 2010 program year will be reviewed by members of the Girl Scout Gold Award Review Committee. It is highly recommended that the girls make a presentation to the committee and ask for their comments, suggestions, and advice. Or they can opt to have the committee review their proposal and respond to them in writing. The approval process is faster for those making a presentation because there is no waiting time to have questions answered or points clarified, but it is up to each individual girl how she wishes to proceed.
The first four proposals requesting to meet with the committee will be seen on that date. You must submit your proposal 6 weeks prior to start date of project. Proposals are due by the first day of every month.

Interior Design Career Dine Around (no more space available)

WHO: 7th and 8th grade Cadettes/Seniors/Ambassadors and Friends
WHEN: Wednesday, March 24, 2010; 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm
WHERE: Ethan Allen, Wilmington, DE
COST: Free, light dinner included

Come join us for a fun filled afternoon with four design consultants from Ethan Allen. The Design Consultants will explain the process of interior design from start to finish and utilize the materials and tools within the Ethan Allen Interior Design Center. Limited amount of space available. First come, first serve!

Health and Wellness Career Dine Around

WHO: 7th and 8th grade Cadettes, Seniors, Ambassadors, and Friends
WHEN: Wednesday, March 24, 2010, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
WHERE: Chestertown, MD
COST: Free, light dinner included

Please join us for the first Career Dine Around in Chestertown, MD entitled, “Health and Wellness.” Spend the evening networking with an owner and physical fitness trainer of Curves Women’s Fitness Center, an obstetrician/gynecologist practicing integrative health medicine, a licensed acupuncturist and practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine and an herbalist and owner of Maryland’s Herb Basket.

There is no fee for this event, but you must contact Barbara Fallat at (302) 456-7150 ext. 7173 or at bfallat@cbgsc.org to reserve your place by March 17, 2010. 

Day in D.C.

WHO: All age levels, family and friends are welcome to attend
WHEN: March 27, 2010, 8 am, departs D.C. at 6 pm
WHERE: NRC, Dover, DE, and Seaford, DE
WHEN: March 27, 2010, 7 am, departs D.C. at 6 pm
WHERE: Oak Hall, VA
COST: $35 for the NRC, Dover and Seaford buses.
$45 for the Oak Hall bus. Price includes transportation, patch, snack and drink for ride home. This trip will take place rain or shine.
NOTE: Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.
What a great time to visit our Nation’s Capital! Join us for a bus trip to Washington, D.C. You will be free to explore Washington for the day. Your drop off location is convenient to all the Smithsonian Museums. Most of the museums are free.

APRIL 2009

Women in Aviation

WHERE: Air National Guard Facility, New Castle County Airport, DE
COST: $ 8. Includes activities and patch.

Join the Delaware 99’s (an international organization for women pilots) who graciously host this popular event. You will learn how to become a pilot, create a variety of gliders and air craft, tour some of the airport.

Please plan to have lunches after leaving the airport, there will be no time included during the program

Earned Archery

Come and experience one of the most popular camp sports. Aim for the target and shoot your way into a new love for the sport. You will earn a Junior badge or Cadette, Senior, or Ambassador Interest Project patch.

Professional Etiquette Career Dine Around

WHO: 10th grade Seniors, Ambassadors, and Friends
WHEN: Wednesday,April 14, 2010, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
WHERE: Wilmington, DE
COST: Free, light dinner included

According to the Emily Post website, good manners are all about being considerate and respectful. This hasn’t changed since Emily Post wrote Etiquette in 1922. All manners are rooted in three fundamental principles: respect, consideration, and honesty, and they serve as tools to help navigate the complexities of social interaction.

Come join us and several outstanding business women to learn about and practice this important conduct which will help you succeed in your upcoming years in college and the working world.

Stewards of the Land

WHO:Cadettes, Seniors, Ambassadors
WHEN: April 16, 7pm – April 18, 2010, 10am
WHERE: Camp Grove Point
COST: $30 per attendee. Registering as a member of GSUSA is NOT required for this event.
Open to all individuals entering 6th grade and above (not just Girl Scouts, not just girls) participants will learn theory, practice and current schools of thought surrounding several types of land stewardship interventions. Participants will get a chance to help with community projects in several environmentally important areas including:
• Erosion control through terracing, rain gardens and rainwater collection
• Hiking trail maintenance
• Food garden creation and maintenance and organic gardening practices
• Composting
• Watershed ecology and waterway protection
Speakers and Leaders from pertinent organizations will share their knowledge and skill. This event combines education with service learning opportunities, and participants can expect to accrue several hours of service time. There is an optional overnight stay Saturday evening. COST: $7.50 per girl. Includes equipment, instruction and fun patch.

Come and enjoy learning a new skill! Learn safety, history of the sport and proper techniques from a qualified instructor

Day in NYC

WHO:All age levels, family and friends are welcome to attend
WHEN: April 24, 2010, 8 am, departs NYC at 7 pm
WHERE: NRC and North Wilmington

WHEN: April 24, 2010, 7:30 am, departs NYC at 7 pm
WHERE: Seaford, DE, Dover, DE and Easton, MD
COST: $40. Includes transportation, patch, snack and drink for the ride home. This trip will take place rain or shine.
NOTE: Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.
Have a great time sight-seeing in New York City! Your group will be free to explore NYC for the day. You might choose to shop, sight-see, visit museums, see a Broadway Show, the possibilities are endless.

Girl Scout Gold Award Recognitions

WHO: Seniors, Ambassadors
WHEN: April 28, 2010, 5 pm – 8:30 pm
WHERE: Modern Maturity Center, Dover, DE
COST: Council pays for the Girl Scout Gold Award recipient along with two guest. Others may attend, but need to register using the Annual Council Meeting Registration Form and submit payment.
Girls earning the Girl Scout Gold Award will receive their award at the Annual Council Meeting. Our Board of Directors is very excited about the opportunity to congratulate the girls and to hear about their wonderful projects. This will also give our delegates the chance to meet the girls and share the girls’ accomplishments with their Service Units. Service Units, in conjunction with recipients’ families, should also plan to honor girls on the local level. Please look for an invitation in the mail if you are a Girl Scout Gold Award recipient sometime in early March 2010. No Girl Scout Gold Award recognitions will be given until the Annual Dinner. If you are unable to attend, you will be able to pick up your recognition after April 28, 2010.

Get Away Weekend

WHERE: Camp Todd, Denton, MD
COST: $100 per person. Includes transportation, lodging, two breakfasts, two lunches and one dinner and patch.
Escape for a fun-filled weekend for just Seniors and Ambassadors.
Friday night stay at Camp Todd with friends from all over the Council looking for adventure like you. Saturday, travel with us to the New River in WV and go white water rafting, hiking, swimming and camping. We will return to Camp Todd on Sunday evening with memories that will last a life time. Satellites? Signals to earth? Radar? Doppler? We’ll learn how the GPS unit has replaced road maps! How are they used? And how do they work? And what if the batteries don’t work? What then? We’ll learn to use the technology and how to read a map.

Advanced Archery

Seniors, Ambassadors, adults with previous Archery Experience.
WHEN: May 22, 2010, 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm
WHERE: Camp Country Center, Hockessin, DE
COST: $8.50 per person. Includes instruction, equipment and fun patch. NOTE: Dress for the weather, wear comfortable shoes and bring a snack to share.
Move those targets back! If you’ve handled a bow and arrow before and want to test your skills for accuracy and strength, today is the day! We’re moving those targets farther away from the shooting line and playing some great games to test your skills.
