Who We Are
Girl Scouts is the world’s preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls
-- all girls -- where, in an accepting and nurturing environment,
girls build character and skills for success in the real world. In
partnership with dedicated adult volunteers, girls develop qualities that
will serve them all their lives, like leadership, strong values, social
conscience, and conviction
about their own potential and self-worth.
OUR
MISSION STATEMENT
Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who
make the world a better place.
The
Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council encompasses all of the Delmarva
Peninsula which includes Delaware, the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and the
Eastern Shore of Virginia. The first troop on the Delmarva Peninsula was
formed at Mount Zion Lutheran Church in Wilmington, Delaware in 1915. In
1962, Wilmington Area Girl Scout Council and Peninsula Girl Scout Council
merged to form the Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council, Inc.
What We Do
In Girl Scouts, girls discover the fun, friendship, and power of girls
together. Through a myriad of enriching experiences, such as extraordinary
field trips, sports skill-building clinics, community service projects,
cultural exchanges, and environmental stewardships, girls grow courageous
and strong. Girl Scouting helps girls develop values to guide their actions
and provide the foundation for sound decision-making; and contribute to the
improvement of society through their abilities, leadership skills, and
cooperation with others.
Our Structure
Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5-17. Girls participate through more
than 1,200 troops and groups throughout the Delmarva Peninsula. The
opportunity of Girl Scout membership exists in every corner of the
peninsula: religious centers, community centers, schools, migrant
communities, housing authorities, and HeadStart centers. Daisy Girl Scouts
are 5-6 years old, Brownie Girl Scouts are 6-8 years old, Junior Girl Scouts
are 8-11 years old, Cadette Girl Scouts are 11-14 years old, and Senior Girl
Scouts are 14-17 years old.
It is never too late to be a Girl Scout. Adult volunteers are the role
models for the girls. Approximately 99 percent of all adults in Girl
Scouting are volunteers. Women and men volunteer in a variety of roles: lead
troops, organize troops, translate materials into other languages, and train
other adults. In Girl Scouting, we realize that today’s busy adults may not
be able to make long-term volunteer commitments. We offer flexible options
to anyone interested in the development of young girls. Whether it is once a
week, once a month, or once a year, your efforts make a difference in a
young girl’s life. When a person makes the commitment to volunteer for Girl
Scouts, we make the commitment to fully prepare the volunteer to succeed in
their position.
How We Are Funded
The Girl Scouts of the
Chesapeake Bay Council funding is generated from the support of nine United
Way/United Fund agencies, grants, corporate contributions, special events,
individual gifts and proceeds from two
product sales programs. The
individual membership registration fee goes directly to the Girl Scouts of
the U.S.A.
