A Guide to Summer Camp 2008
GENERAL INFORMATION
Accreditation
Grove Point is accredited by the American Camping Association. Both
Grove Point and Camp Todd are certified youth camps licensed by the
State of Maryland. All camp programs meet standards of health, safety,
and program excellence set by the American Camping Association and the
Girl Scouts of the USA.
Camp Staff
Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay is dedicated to hiring professional
and nurturing camp staff and volunteers. Our camp staff are carefully
selected applicants from throughout the United States and the world.
They are chosen for their maturity, program abilities, and experience.
They are adults who have a special interest in young people and the
outdoors. All staff attend a pre-camp training involving camp skills,
Girl Scout program, safety, emergency procedures, and human development
skills such as dealing with homesick campers and team building. Staff
members who have been certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding
direct all pool and waterfront activities. At Camp Grove Point, we also
contract with other agencies to ensure safe programs such as rock
climbing and horseback riding.
Health and Safety
Your child’s health and safety are our first priority. All programs are
planned and staffed according to the high standards of the American
Camping Association (ACA) and Girl Scouts of the USA. All Camp Grove
Point staff are certified in American Red Cross First-Aid and CPR. A
Nurse or EMT is onsite at all times at Camp Grove Point and Summer
Roundup. Please leave valuables at home. Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake
Bay Council, Inc. is not responsible for any items lost or stolen at
camp.
Summer Heat
Children naturally adapt to living in the summer heat without air
conditioning or fans by staying hydrated, resting during the hottest
part of the day, and wearing cool, cotton clothing. The packing list
included in the confirmation packet will include all the necessary items
to help beat the heat. We provide plenty of clean drinking water.
Camper Behavior
Camp life is an excellent opportunity for girls to live and work
together. Camp is also a community of many people and certain standards
of behavior are expected. The director and staff will do everything
possible to help girls adjust to camp life. However, the Girl Scouts of
the Chesapeake Bay Council, Inc. reserves the right to send home from
camp any girl who consistently misbehaves, who willfully disobeys camp
rules, or whose behavior towards others is unacceptable. No refunds will
be given for girls who are sent home due to behavior issues. The girl’s
parent/guardian is responsible for picking her up from camp.
Trading Post
Our camp store, the Trading Post, allows campers to purchase t-shirts,
patches, stationery, and other novelties. A deposit in your child’s name
enables her to make purchases at the Trading Post without the worry of
handling money. Trading Post credit may be left during camp check-in, or
pre-paid with registration or fee balance. The average deposit is $20.
Unused money will be given back to you when your child leaves camp.
Trading Posts will be available at Camp Grove Point and Camp Todd, for
Summer Daze Day Camp.
Refunds/Cancellations
For Summer Roundup, please review the Summer
Roundup Refund/Cancellation information here.
Written cancellation notices and requests for refunds for the balance of
the camp fee must be received at least four weeks prior to the beginning
of the scheduled camp session. If you register less than four weeks
before a session starts, there is no refund. Deposits are never
refundable. No refunds will be
made for a child arriving late, leaving early or attending only part of
a session regardless of the reason. If your child does not attend camp
at the date and time scheduled, you are still responsible for the entire
camp fee unless you cancel in writing four weeks prior to the start of
the camp session. Camp fees, less the non-refundable deposit, are
refundable providing written notification has been received due to the
illness or injury of a child within one week prior to the session. A
written statement from a physician is required. If minimum registration
for a program hasn’t been met, we will contact the parent/guardian of
those attending the session and place them in another session or give a
refund.
Financial Assistance
We want to provide every girl who wants to go to camp the opportunity to
do so. Assistance in the form of a “Campership” will be given to as many
girls as funds will allow. Campership applications must accompany the
Camp Registration form. Registrations for Summer Roundup must be
received in the Newark office no later than March 30, 2008. All other
registrations must be received in the Newark Office by May 1, 2008. You
may be eligible for dependent care credit on your federal income tax.
Contact your tax advisor for additional information. The following
friends of Girl Scouting help to make Financial Aid possible: United
Ways of DE, Cecil, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Caroline, Lower Eastern Shore,
Virginia’s Eastern Shore and United Fund of Talbot, The Christmas Shop,

agencies, DE GIA, service organizations, businesses, corporations,

SUMMER ROUNDUP
Sleeping Arrangements
Girls will be sleeping in four-person Adirondacks or platform tents.
They may request to be in the same unit as a buddy.
Meals
Except for cookouts, all meals will be served in the dining hall.
Staff Positions
Summer Roundup is staffed by volunteers. Volunteer positions include
kitchen staff, lifeguards, camp nurse, program and unit staff. If you
are interested in applying for an opening, please call Amy Schisler at
410-745-2559. Discounts are offered for staff children. We are in
particular need of lifeguards.
Refunds/Cancellations
Initial deposit is NOT REFUNDABLE unless a girl is not accepted because
her program choice or session is filled or canceled. The remaining camp
fee (not including the deposit) will be refunded on the following basis:
1. we receive written notice of withdrawal by June 1. 2. In case of
camper illness or injury, a written request including physician
verification (if canceling prior to start of camp) is received within 2
weeks of end of camp. The refund will be pro-rated on a per diem basis.
NOTE: If a camper leaves camp early due to homesickness or parent
request, there will be no refund.
GROVE POINT RESIDENT CAMP
Swimming Evaluations
At the beginning of each camper session we have an all camp celebration
to welcome all of our campers. During this celebration, the lifeguards
lead specific water games for girls. The games are designed to show each
camper’s swimming ability and comfort in deep water in a non-threatening
environment.
Camp Meals
Camp provides nourishing, well-balanced, and kid friendly meals. All
meals are served family style in the dining hall. The meals are prepared
by food service professionals. The breakfast menu always includes a
cereal bar and the dinner menus always include a salad bar, giving
campers a variety of foods from which to choose. We always have handy
the classic “PB and J”. Please note that the program of some camp
sessions calls for girls to cook their own meals as part of the
experience. In those instances, girls participate in planning some of
the menus themselves. All cook-outs are supervised and directed by camp
trained adults. Arrangements may be made for campers with special
dietary needs by advance written notice. The first meal is at 6:00 p.m.
Make sure that your child has eaten lunch on arrival day prior to coming
to camp. Please do not send food with your child.
Health Check-In
Upon arrival at camp, your child will get the chance to visit our Camp
Spa to be primped for our opening celebration. Your child has the option
to have her hair done as we check her head for lice and her toe nails
painted as we check her feet for athlete’s foot. Hopefully the “spa”
experience will help your child be more at ease with this process.
However, if these conditions are found, your child will not be admitted
to camp until cleared by a primary physician. If recently treated for
either of these conditions, a note from the treating physician should be
brought to camp stating that the child is no longer contagious.
Arrivals & Departures
Campers arrive on Sunday between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. During this
time, parents are welcome to visit their camper’s unit, meet her
counselors, and tour the camp. Campers who are in a 3-day or one-week
session will depart on the last day of their camp session between 4:00
p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Sleeping Arrangements
Girls of the same age live in groups called units and sleep in
four-person tents with floors and cots or three-sided cabins called
Adirondack shelters, unless otherwise indicated. Each unit is staffed
with trained counselors and program specialists. Final placement of the
campers in living units is the decision of the Camp Director and is
based on age, program level, and camping experience.
Camp Buddies
Every effort will be made to place your child with her camp buddy. It
must be requested on the registration form and her buddy must also
request your child. They both must be registered for the same program
and session. Only one buddy name will be processed for each girl.
Family Discount
If a family sends more than one girl to resident camp, $10 of the
additional girl’s camp fees will be deducted if the registration forms
are sent in together. Not available for Campership recipients.
GROVE POINT WEEKEND CAMP
Housing
Camp housing will be assigned based on availability, special needs, and
group size. Participants may be assigned to cabins, platform tents or
Adirondack shelters. If your group has special needs, please note it on
the registration form. Depending on living assignments, bathroom
facilities may be flush toilets or latrines. Showers and flush toilets
are available for everyone in the central bath house and the program
center.
Arrival and Departure
Participants should arrive between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
Departure is at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.
