Camp Staff - The Info You Need!

Location
Camp Grove Point is located near Earleville and Cecilton, Maryland on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay. Situated at the southern most tip of Cecil County, camp property sits on the point of land where the Chesapeake Bay and the Sassafras River meet. The property is wooded and contains 265 acres of land, including beach, swamp, and meadow. Several major cities, including Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia are easily reached within a one to two hour drive. New York City is a three hour drive.

Facilities
Groups of campers live in areas of camp called units. Unit accommodations are platform tents (large canvas tents with floors and four cots) or Adirondack Shelters (three walled cabins with built-in bunks). Most units do not have electricity. Unit staff shares a tent or Adirondack with other staff in the camper unit. Assistant staff share living quarters with other assistant staff. Camp staff is not hired to work in specific units/programs unless stated in their letter of agreement. Staff should expect to rotate through most units and work with all age levels during their employment at Grove Point.

Meals and Snacks
We serve three meals daily in the camp Dining Hall. All meals are served family style. The menu is diverse and camper-friendly. There is always a salad bar at lunch and dinner and cereal/fruit bar at breakfast. You will be well-fed! All meals are provided for you (cookout food, too). You may also leave snacks and non-alcoholic beverages in the staff house for use on your time-off. Be sure to label all items with your name.

Special Dietary Requirements
If you have special dietary requirements or restrictions, please indicate those on your Health Form. We strive to offer a wide variety of options at each meal to accommodate most dietary restrictions. If you have concerns about food service at camp, please ask for an appointment to discuss your needs with the Kitchen Supervisor shortly after your arrival at camp.

Climate
Summer daytime temperatures generally reach into the high 90’s with high humidity levels. Evenings are warm, but occasionally turn cool and sometimes rainy. Rain and thunderstorms are frequent during the summer. Be prepared – camp continues rain or shine!

Medical Policies
Staff must have had a health examination within 24 months of camp. The Health History must have been completed within six months of camp. Camp Grove Point’s Health Care Supervisor will conduct a health screening of all staff during check-in. It is important that your Health History give the dates of your immunizations, especially Tetanus, and show proof of a negative Tuberculosis test within the last 12 months.

All medications, including vitamins, must be kept in the infirmary and dispensed by the camp health care staff. No medications of any kind are to be kept in your campsite. The exceptions to this policy are epi-pens and inhalers.

Staff Uniforms and Dress Code
Your staff uniform consists of a staff shirt and tie, which will be provided for you and mid-thigh or longer, khaki/tan shorts which you must provide. Staff uniforms are worn twice a week. The rest of the week you are expected to wear clothing that is appropriate around children. Staff is required to wear socks and tennis shoes or protective sport sandals at all times. Water shoes or old tennis shoes are required for waterfront activities. Staff is expected to wear or carry a watch.

The following items are not permitted at camp: two-piece or “cut-out” bathing suits, flip flops (except for in the shower house), shirts without straps (including “spaghetti strap” tank tops), shorts that are shorter than mid-thigh, clothing with any inappropriate references or religious references, and excessive jewelry.

Time Off
A staff house with electricity, showers and flush toilets will be provided for your use during time off. The lounge also has a kitchen, television, and VCR/DVD player. Free laundry facilities are available at camp. As you will read in the Camp Staff Personnel Policies and Practices, you are entitled to time off each day as well as 24 hours per week. Time off will be scheduled and assigned during camp.

Weekends
All staff has off from Friday evening (after all units are inspected) until Sunday morning. Camp will be open over the weekend, providing housing for staff, however no meal service is available. Most staff choose to leave camp on the weekends.

Pay Checks
Camp staff pay dates are every two weeks. You will receive your first check after you have completed a full pay period. Please note that pay for pre-camp will be included on your final pay check. Pay for pre-camp is contingent upon the completion of your agreement.

Camp Trading Post
We carry an assortment of items important to our campers and staff in the camp trading post. We carry items such as: post cards, pens, paper, postage stamps, batteries, flashlights, hair brushes, toilet articles. Camp staff may purchase items from the trading post and charge them “on account” until pay day. All trading post accounts must be settled on the next pay day.

Infirmary
Please note that the infirmary stocks over-the-counter medications for things like pain and allergies, as well as tampons and pads for feminine hygiene emergencies. The infirmary can also make arrangements for you to see a physician, if necessary, and to get prescriptions refilled at the pharmacy in town.

A Trip to Town
You are permitted to leave camp on your daily time off. If you use your time wisely, you can get to town and return within the allowed time. If you leave camp, you must check in and out at the camp office.

Phone Calls
Staff may use the phone in the staff house for personal calls. We are long distance from most everything, so phone calls require the use of a calling card. Cell phones generally do not work well at camp. There are a few places where reception may be possible. If you bring a cell phone to camp, use is restricted to your time-off and specific locations. The cell phone policy is strictly enforced.

Internet
Internet is a tricky thing at camp. We do have wireless internet at camp. Camp computers can be used in the office on a limited basis. There is a daily sign-up sheet for usage during your time-off.
