Flying High with the Girl Scouts!
Women in Aviation 2007

On
Saturday, September 22nd, thanks to a partnership with the Delaware 99s (
an
international organization for women pilots), over 60 Junior and Cadette
Girl Scouts enjoyed an afternoon learning about the importance of women
pilots of the past, present and future.

During
their visit to the Air National Guard Facility at New Castle Airport, in
New Castle Delaware, they met female National Guard pilots and members of the
Delaware 99s, visited the control tower, learned about different airplane
models and the principles of flight, and toured a C-130

transport!
The
famous pilot Amelia Earhart, co-founder of the 99s, once wrote “"I want to
[fly] because I want to do it. Women must try to do things as men have tried.
When they fail, their failure must be but a challenge to others."

Girl
Scout troop leader Donna Francisco, of Wilmington, echoed this sentiment,
saying it was important that her scouts have strong female role models,
especially women who hold jobs that are stereotypically filled by men. So
when she heard about the Girl Scouts’ Women in Aviation event, she signed her
troop up immediately.

“I
want the girls in my troop to experience as much of the world as they can,”
Franscisco said. “They need to be shown that they can be and do whatever they
want in life, and be successful.”
