Brownie Troop 206 is collecting pennies to send to the Red Cross. We
are spending our first two troop meetings rolling the pennies that
they have gathered. In addition, the troop is also matching those
funds with monies that we earned last year selling cookies. The
girls will also be making cards and notes to send to children in
various large shelters in the Gulf Coast area.

Ryan Arthurton, the librarian at
Newark Charter School, is spearheading an effort to drive a truck of supplies and goods
down to a regional hurricane relief distribution center in Baker,
La. this weekend. This is a center run by a Christian social
services agency called Center for Caring, and they have 3 centers
throughout La, so they are able to distribute any relief supplies
across the geographic area.
Spallco has donated a 24’ truck, the faculty at Newark Charter
School have pooled their money to cover the operating expenses, and
Theater Extreme and the McDonalds restaurants in this area (both
local companies) are donating the money for gas. Ryan has a
commercial truck license, and he will be driving the truck down to
Louisiana, leaving this Sunday Sept 11.
For anyone wishing to donate goods, the following items are
especially needed:
- Clothing including new, unopened packages of underwear, in any size
(adult or childrens).
- Personal hygiene items (toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo,
deodorant, shaving items, etc.)
- Bottled water
- Non-perishable food items
- Also, sturdy cardboard boxes are needed to pack the supplies in
Collections are being taken from 7 am to 7 pm on Friday Sept. 9 and Saturday
Sept. 10 from 9 – 2 in the
parking lot of Newark Charter School. The truck will be loaded at 2
pm on Saturday, and Ryan will take off on Sunday morning.

Request for local aid efforts in Dover?
Good-Morning,
We had our first GS Senior meeting this weekend and our Troop voted
to collect toiletry items instead of collecting cash/gift cards. But
we need an address or contact person within our area to contact once
we collected all items. Could you provide us with such information?
Thank you,

Troop 345 in SU 11 is my granddaughter's troop. Her leader had a
family member we were gathering for. However, Althea called and said
her house and 5 others in her neighborhood was spared to just some
minor wind damage. She has offered to take the stuff down that we
have received and give to some of the people who were not so lucky
in her neighborhood.
She said the area is in desperate need of sheets, blankets, pillows
, towels, wash cloths and personal items. (tooth paste, brushes
deodorant shampoo)
I would like to thank everyone who came through with thoughts,
prayers and material stuff. they showed what a girl scout will do
for a sister scout in need.
May God Bless You all, Cindy

Cecil County, MD
Yesterday
afternoon, 9/8, I received an e-mail about Operation Cecil County
Responds, an effort coordinated with the Cecil Co. United Way,
requesting items for a truck heading to the Gulf area. Since
donations were only being accepted through this weekend, there
wasn't much much time to act but e-mails went out, and Jen of Troop
57, Chesapeake City and Elkton, MD, collected an overflowing
full-sized pick-up truck, including a very crammed cab, of goods
from the Tome School. Thanks to the generosity of the families of
her school, and the leadership skills she has learned in 11+ years
as a Girl Scout, Jen knew how to act quickly to make a difference.
The folks at the collection drop expressed their gratitude to the
school and Girl Scouts.
Troop 57, and I'm sure other troops of Area 2, will also be
collecting items to help the 300 evacuees from Hurricane Katrina who
are coming to Nazarene camp in North East, MD.

Brownie Troop 204 (Secretary, Md) has decided to collect school supplies to send to
Girl Scouts of Gulf Pines Council.
Cheryl Price
***UPDATE***
Brownie Troop 204: The girls have filled 35 pencil boxes with school
supplies that will be sent to Girl Scouts of Gulf Pines this week.
They have also decided to send “Try-its in a box” to Girl Scouts –
Audubon Council. This week we are sending supplies and patches for
25 girls to earn the Girl Sports Try-it. We hope to send another box
with different try-its or activities each month for at least the
next few months.

Onley, VA
My name is Teresa Ferry and I am the troop leader for GS Troop 1456
in Onley, VA of Service Unit 89 of Chesapeake Bay Council.
Our Troop is made up of 24 girls which is mixed with Brownies,
Juniors and Cadettes.
The Cadettes sponsored a service project to help with victims of
Hurricane Katrina. This service project started the year off which
included the help from the entire troop.
Each age level was responsible to bring in $5 worth of a particular
item which was donated solely by their own monies. Therefore, this
was their donation which would give them the good feeling of helping
out a great lot of people and children their own age.
The Brownies were responsible to bring in toys, books and coloring
books with crayons, the Juniors were responsible to bring in
toiletry items and the Cadettes were responsible for non-perishable
food items.
We collected a huge supply of every category. The girls did a great
job. We hope that this will help the victims and give them a sense
of hope as well as putting smiles back on many of the children's
faces. We also had a small business, "Colona's Auto & Truck
Repairs,' which opted to match the girls' donations of $5 each and
supplied 20 blankets to send with our collections.
We hope that many of the Girl Scouts troops will get out and help.
Teresa
