Newark, DE, January 17, 2007:  A recent study funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts, finds that college students lack the literacy to handle complex, real-life tasks as having math skills needed for checkbooks or restaurant tips.

The Girl Scout Cookie program is more than just selling cookies, but has an impact in girls’ lives by giving them real life skills such as money management, decision-making, and goal setting... skills they need for today and tomorrow. The beneficial effects are evidenced by the fact that many of today’s businesswomen cite selling Girl Scout cookies as their first step toward successful careers.

“I learned how to manage money and time from selling cookies.” Said Cadette Girl Scout Megan, Troop 54, Newark, Delaware. Megan has been participating in the Cookie Program for the past eight years. Her troop is working towards a trip.

Girl Scouts will be out in your community taking Girl Scout cookie orders starting on January 6, 2007. Cookies will be delivered by Girl Scouts between February 3rd and 8th.

All the proceeds from this program stay here in the communities the Girl Scouts come from, directly benefiting all of the Girl Scouts in our community, including the Girl Scout troop you buy Girl Scout cookies from. In 2006, over 8,000 Girl Scouts learned money management and marketing skills in Cookie Program with over 1 million boxes sold to the community. Approximately 19,000 girls participate in Girl Scouts on the Delmarva Peninsula each year.
