Teen Girl Scouts Receive Scholarships

Newark, DE, September 6, 2006:The Girl Scout Mission is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. The Girl Scout Gold Award exemplifies our mission. The Delmarva Power Foundation recognizes the achievements of the young women who have pursued the Girl Scout Gold Award by pledging $10,000 for scholarships for post high school education.

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest recognition that a Senior Girl Scout may earn. Someone once described the Gold Award as being "what you really want to be remembered for" in Girl Scouting. For many, the leadership skills, organizational skills, and sense of community and commitment that come from "going for the gold" cement the foundation for a lifetime of active citizenship.

The following young women who have earned the Girl Scout Gold Award have been awarded scholarships for post high school education:

Melinda Carrow, Hartly, DE

Melinda graduated from Polytech and is attending Wilmington College in Wilmington, DE.

For her Gold Award project, Melinda conducted a sports camp for 5 to 7 year old children.  The focus of the camp was to teach the children the fundamentals of several types of sports.  This camp aided families by being cost effective and safe.

Jennifer Conroe, Dagsboro, DE

Jennifer graduated from Indian River High School and is attending Ferrum College in Ferrum, VA.

For her Gold Award project, Jennifer created a nonsmoking program, Say No To Smoking, for children in fourth to sixth grade.  The children were taught about the dangers of smoking, the cost, and how to avoid the pressures of advertising and peer pressure.  The program was so well received by the school system that Jennifer was invited to run the program next school year

Nyssa Crompton, Wilmington, DE

Nyssa graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School and is attending Luther College in Decorah, IA.

For her Gold Award project, Nyssa created a weekend program, Endangered Animals…Get Involved, for the Brandywine Zoo which included posters and pamphlets as well as hands on activities such as a scavenger hunt and tiger puppet craft. The purpose of the project was to educate the public about endangered animals and what can be done to save these animals.

Dianne de la Veaux, Wilmington, DE

Dianne graduated from Wilmington Friends and is attending New York University/Steinhart in New York City.

Diane earn her Gold Award when she shared her talents in acting with a Brownie troop teaching them and organizing them to share their combined talents with the community through a historical play about Juliette Low.  Once she taught the Brownies how to act they took their show on the road to a local retirement home.

Charvi Ganatra, Newark, DE

Charvi graduated from The Charter School of Wilmington and is attending University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA.

Charvi collected various musical instruments for a newly formed school for underprivileged children in the Virgin Islands so that music could be a part of the school curriculum. The project utilized several methods of collection in order to get the needed instruments.  Collections included posting advertisements in local papers, and concerts requesting donations of instruments.

Gabrielle Farmer, Wilmington, DE

Gabrielle Farmer graduated from Brandywine High School and is attending McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

Gabrielle helped to bring families together in a welcoming Christian atmosphere to provide fun and educational activities for all members of the family.  The families were able to enjoy what their children learned at the end of the week through a live performance.

Mariel Harvey, Wilmington, DE

Mariel graduated from Brandywine High School and is attending Boston College in Chestnut Hill, MA.

Mariel built a teaching platform adjacent to the river at the Delaware Nature Society located at Abbots Mill.  The platform will be used to teach visitors about the swamp and as a dock for people utilizing the canoes.

Christina Lessard, Dover, DE

Christina graduated from St. Thomas More Academy and is attending The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

Christina conducted a sports camp for 5 to 7 year old children.  The focus of the camp was to teach the children the fundamentals of several types of sports.  This camp aided families by being cost effective and safe.

Sara Loviza, Bear, DE

Sara graduated from Red Lion Christian Academy and is attending the University of Delaware.

For Sara’s Gold Award, she renovated Holy Spirit Church. She painted, fixed kneelers, made bookmarkers for the hymn books making the church more welcoming to worshipers.

Beth Malseed, Claymont, DE

Beth graduated from Archmere Academy and is attending DeSales University in Center Valley, PA.

Beth planned a track meet for the blind.  The track meet benefited not only the blind by enabling them to participate in a sporting event but it benefited the seeing by enabling them to interact and learn about being blind for a day. 

Amanda Rapczak, North East, MD

Amanda graduated from Rising Sun High School and is attending College of Notre Dame of Maryland in Baltimore, MD

Amanda launched Operation Literacy for her Gold Award project. She organized a reading program for second graders at her local elementary school to help them develop stronger reading skills.

Sarah Stapley, Newark, DE

Sarah graduated from Charter School of Wilmington and is attending University of Delaware.

 Sarah created an educational hands-on program to introduce the public to bats, sharks, and snakes at Brandywine Zoo.  The purpose of these displays was to inform the public about how important that these animals are to our world habitat and the myths that are told about them.

Girl Scouting builds girls of confidence, courage, and character, who make the world a better place.
