Born and raised in India, Dr. Uma Chowdhry came to
the US in 1968 with a B.S. in Physics from Indian Institute of
Science, Mumbai University, received an M.S. from Caltech in
Engineering Science in 1970 and a PhD in Materials Science from MIT
in 1976. Uma Chowdhry joined DuPont in 1977 as a research scientist,
has held various technology & business management positions in
corporate R&D, electronics and chemicals businesses. She was
promoted to VP-CR&D in 2002.
For contributions to the science of ceramics, Uma was
elected "Fellow" of the American Ceramic Society in 1989, elected to
the National Academy of Engineering in 1996, and elected to the
American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2003.
Uma serves on various boards and committees including
the Industrial Research Institute, National Inventors Hall of Fame,
Department of Energy’s Laboratory Operations, National Committee for
Women in Science and Engineering, and the advisory board of
University of Delaware’s Engineering school.
