51st Convention of Girl Scouts of the USA

October 30 – November 2, 2008
Indiana Convention Center

Ready or not...it's time to start preparing for the National Convention to be held October 30-November 2, 2008, at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, IN.

There are many ways to participate - as a Delegate/Alternative, a visitor, or as part of the Girl Scout Leadership Institute.

National Delegate/Alternate
Adults and girls ages 14-17 were encouraged to apply to become a national delegate to represent GSCB. Delegates represent the council at the triennial meeting of the national council and any other meetings as scheduled for the national council delegates during the triennium. Participants must be a currently-registered member of the Girl Scout movement, a citizen of the United States, and at least 14 years of age or older. The national council delegate position is for a term of three years. A delegate or alternate, if elected, is expected to remain active in Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay for the entire three years. The council covers the cost of attending all meetings for its elected delegates and alternates. The Nominating Committee for the Board of Directors will begin reviewing applications at the end of January/beginning of February. The slate of nominations will be presented at the Annual Meeting where the delegates of the council will vote to approve the slate of Delegates and Alternates to the National Council Session.

Visitor
Many volunteers and girls enjoy attending the National Convention as a visitor. It's a great opportunity to meet Girl Scouts from all over the country. You can check out the exhibit and vendor hall, attend a session, watch the democratic process in action, and have fun! This could even be a troop trip. Cost will be approximately $1,000 per person. Visitors to the convention will be invited to the training sessions for the Delegates and Alternates and the Council will help make travel arrangements (if you would like).

Girl Scout Leadership Institute
Formerly known as the Girl Congress, this is a chance for girls 11-18 to participate in a leadership experience prior to the National Convention. This will be held in Indianapolis October 29-30. These are school days. More information will be coming out on opportunities for girls to sign up to attend. More information should be available in February.

2008 National Girl Scout Leadership Institute
October 29-30, 2008

The 2008 Girl Scout Leadership Institute (GSLI) (formerly Girl Congress) is part of the leadership development program for girls in grades 6 -12, designed to develop and hone their leadership skills, provide an opportunity to discuss key health issues relevant to them, and engage in a fun and interactive learning environment with peers and adults.

Sponsored by Girl Scouts of the USA and Girl Scouts of Central Indiana, the GSLI will be held on October 29-30, 2008, in Indianapolis, Indiana, prior to the National Council Session.
Over 2,000 girls from across the country will have the opportunity to participate in this unique and exciting event. The 2008 GSLI will serve as a model for future national, regional and local GSLIs to be implemented throughout Girl Scouting. As part of this leadership experience, girls will have the opportunity to engage in a myriad of workshops in an environment that fosters inclusion and pluralism. Workshop topics range from understanding the democratic process in a way that prepares girls to better participate in the business of the National Convention to learning and discussing key issues of health relevant to and identified by girls, such as self-esteem, bullying and stress.

With experts in these fields leading group sessions, girls will be provided a safe space to discuss ideas and issues that are important to them. Through participation in these workshops girls will identify ways the information is personally relevant, as well as strategies to take action back in their communities.

In sync with the Girl Scout Leadership Development Program, the following goals and objectives have been identified.
