The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest recognition that a Senior
Girl Scout may earn. Someone once described the Gold Award as being
"what you really want to be remembered for" in Girl Scouting. For
many, the leadership skills, organizational skills, and sense of
community and commitment that come from "going for the gold" cement
the foundation for a lifetime of active citizenship.
Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council
is proud to announce the
following seventeen young women who have earned the Girl Scout Gold
Award:
Adebola A., Juliette, Wicomico
County, MD
Project: "Networking at the Y"
I have earned my Girl Scout Silver
Award and Community Service Bar. I have been in Girl Scouting for
twelve years. My Girl Scout Gold Award project was entitled
“Networking at the Y.”
For
my project, I recruited community support and together we redesigned
the Salisbury YMCA after-school computer lab, doubling its size from
four computers to eight.
In school, I am involved with Marching and Symphonic Band, the Bible
Club and various honor societies. My hobbies include dance, playing
the bassoon and playing the piano.
Next fall, I will attend Columbia University in New York City to
major in biomedical engineering and minor in music. I hope to earn
my doctorate and will pursue a career in global health.
Kelsey C., Troop 485, Kent
County, DE
Project: “Killens Pond
Butterfly Garden”
I have earned my Girl Scout Silver Award and have been in Girl
Scouting for ten years. My Girl Scout Gold Award project was
entitled “Killens Pond Butterfly Garden,” which I worked on with a
sister Girl Scout.

I am proud of completing my Girl Scout Gold Award project.
I enjoyed doing something for my community. The park was interested
in re-establishing a butterfly garden to beautify the area. We
replaced stones, mulch, and flowers, and added a bench and butterfly
houses.
I have played on a volleyball team for over six years. I enjoy being
part of the team, working together, and am proud of our
accomplishments. I have achieved Honor Roll many times.
I plan to attend college and am interested in pursuing a degree in
psychology.

County, DE
Project: “Killens Pond
Butterfly Garden”
I have earned my Girl Scout Silver Award and have been involved with
Girl Scouts for eleven years. I completed my Girl Scout Gold Award
with another girl from my troop. Our project is entitled “Killens
Pond Butterfly Garden.”
This
project was very time consuming and I put a lot of hard work into
it. The most successful part of our project is that the butterflies
were actually present. While we were working, more and more
butterflies came. Upon finishing this project, I knew people would
benefit from it. I would do another garden like this, because the
hard work showed. This is my greatest achievement in Girl Scouts and
I am proud of it.
I am a scholar athlete and have a Varsity Volleyball Letter and a
Varsity Tennis Letter.
I plan to go to college and then whatever else is necessary to
become an optometrist.

Castle County, DE
Project: “Camp Abilities
Pennsylvania Sports Weekend”
I
am a committee leader for Blue-Gold, swim instructor/group leader
for the West Chester University Special Physical Activities Program
and School Campus Ministry, Eucharistic Minister and a retreat
leader for Encounter XX. I have been in Girl Scouting for eleven
years and have earned my Girl Scout Silver Award, Cadette Leadership
Pin, Cadette Girl Scout Program Aide, Cadette Girl Scout Challenge,
From Dreams to Reality Award, Senior Leadership Pin, Girl Scout Gold
Career Award and Community Service Bar.
I have earned my Girl Scout Gold Award in a project called “Camp
Abilities Pennsylvania Sports Weekend.” I love working with kids and
I love sports, so my Girl Scout Gold Award project was a dream come
true. The project was a weekend-long sports camp/clinic for kids who
are visually impaired and blind. The weekend stressed independence,
empowerment, sports, and nutrition.
At school, I am on the math league team and write for the newspaper.
I have won awards from various math and writing competitions.
My future goals are to go to college to become a high school
teacher, possibly in Math and English.

Project: “Health and Fitness
Camp”
I participate in volleyball, basketball, tennis, chorus, and I am a
member of the Student Ambassador Program at my school. I have been
in Girl Scouting for twelve years. My Girl Scout Gold Award project
was a “Health and Fitness Camp.”
My
project was based on teaching children the importance of health and
fitness. We played running games and then had a snack. The children
were instructed in making healthy snacks. The day ended with arts
and crafts. The children had a lot of fun and learned a lot. The
principal of the high school agreed to make my camp an annual event,
so this year I will be running the camp again, and teaching other
students to take my place in future years.
Sara L., New Castle County, DE
Project: Church Renovation
I
am a 2006 graduate in Bear, DE, where I was involved with Science
Olympiad, Honor Society and field hockey. I am currently attending
the University of Delaware.
I have been a Girl Scout for 14 years and I earned my Girl Scout
Silver Award. I am now the leader of a Daisy troop and co-leader of
a Cadette/Senior troop. For my Girl Scout Gold Award, I renovated
Holy Spirit Church in New Castle, DE.

My project had me fixing almost all the kneelers, which were not
properly bolted to the ground. I also made bookmarkers and attached
them to the inside binding of all the hymn books.
I volunteer in the church community by altar serving and helping out
at the church’s food shelter.
Nicole M., Troop 127, New
Castle County, DE
Project: “Time of Your Life”
I
have been in Girl Scouts for twelve years. My Girl Scout Gold Award
was entitled “Time of Your Life,” which I worked on with two of my
troop members.
My Girl Scout Gold Award was designed for the senior citizens living
at Little Sisters of the Poor. We created the theme around a
Hawaiian Luau. I feel the most successful part of my project was at
the end of the evening, seeing everybody in the room smiling.
My hobbies include camping with Girl Scouts, music, and most of all,
working with younger children.
Amanda M., Troop 907, New
Castle County, DE
Project: “Hands Reaching Back”
I
am involved with tennis, volleyball, serve as the senior yearbook
editor, and I am a member of the Binai Birth youth organization and
the Environmental Club at my school. I have earned awards for
Dartmouth Book, Magna Cum Laude for the National Latin Exam, and I
am on the Honor Roll
and High Honor Roll. I have been a Girl Scout
for 10 years. I also earned my Girl Scout Silver Award. My Girl
Scout Gold Award, “Hands Reaching Back”, really meant a lot to me.
For my Girl Scout Gold Award project, I returned to my old
elementary school, The Pilot School, where children with learning
disabilities receive instruction tailored to their specific styles.
At the request of the current Principal, I planned a presentation
which outlines the transition and new adjustments they must make
when re-entering a regular school system. I went to Pilot and spent
time talking and listening to these children as they told me about
their new school and what they were most concerned about as they
departed from Pilot.
I will be attending Northeastern University this coming fall in
hopes of acquiring a master’s degree in architecture.
Clara M., Troop 187, New
Castle County, DE
Project: “St. Peter’s
Cathedral Rectory Fix-Up”
I
have been a Girl Scout since 1st grade. I am a member of the
National Honor Society, chorus, Z-Club, Blue-Gold Club, Markings
(Student literary magazine), Morning News, Cross Country and the
Italian Exchange program at my high school.
For my Girl Scout Gold Award, entitled “St. Peter’s Cathedral
Rectory Fix-Up”, I renovated two of the most commonly used areas in
the rectory of the Cathedral of St. Peter. The living room and
foyer, which included the hallway, were cleaned and painted. This
project helped me learn the importance of community service and it
emphasized my commitment to my religion and Girl Scouts.
My entire family is very active in both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts
and was chosen as the Scouting Family of the Year for 2007 by the
Del-Mar-Va Boy Scout Council.
I will be attending LaSalle University in the fall and plan to major
in art history and Italian.
Katie M., Troop 580, Queen
Anne's County, MD
Project: “Heart Start
Carnival”
I
was a member of the National Honor Society, president of the French
Club, a Maryland Distinguished Scholar, the captain of the dance
team, and the salutatorian of the graduating class of my high school. I am also a Sunday school teacher.
I have loved every minute of my 13 years’ experience as a Girl
Scout. I have earned my Girl Scout Silver Award and I was an
Alternate Delegate at the GSUSA National Convention in 2005. For my
Girl Scout Gold Award, I did a project entitled “Heart Start
Carnival” with another troop member.
My Girl Scout Gold Award Project was done to raise funds for the
purchase of an External Automated Defibrillator (AED) for
installation in the Kent Island Library, along with training for the
staff. We held a Father/Daughter dance for girls in grade K-5 to
raise money. The event was extremely successful; we were able to buy
two AEDs. The additional unit will be installed in the St.
Christopher’s Church Hall.
I will be attending the University of Maryland in the fall, then
doing a tour with the Peace Corps. I hope to go on to law school.
Megan M., Troop 127, New
Castle County, DE
Project: “Time of Your Life”
I
am a member of the National Honor Society and am on the varsity swim
team, a board member of Z–Club, the Blue-Gold Buddy captain,
Scrapbook chair, and was nominated for and attended the National
Junior Leadership conference at school. This year I participated in
a Greek foreign exchange program.
I have been in Girl Scouts for 10 years. My Girl Scout Gold Award
was entitled “Time of Your Life,” and was designed for the senior
citizens residing at Little Sisters of the Poor to attend a Hawaiian
Luau. I accomplished this project with two other troop members. I
made frames and invitations for all of the residents. I set up a
photo background and acted as a photographer. I also made shirts for
myself and my two troop members. I feel we gave the residents a
memorable evening.
In the fall I plan to attend college to earn a master’s degree in
speech and language pathology to become a speech therapist,
specializing in children.
Sarah P., Troop 127, New
Castle County, DE
Project: “Time of Your Life”
I was vice president of my Junior class, Senior Blue-Gold
Ambassador, Morning Announcements, Prom Promise and varsity soccer
at school. During my eleven years in Girl Scouting, I have earned my
Girl Scout Silver Award, Gold Leadership Award charm, Leadership in
Training and I am currently serving my third year as the secretary
for Service Unit 16. My Girl Scout Gold Award project was entitled
“Time of Your Life.”
I
was able to accomplish my Girl Scout Gold Award by working with two
of my troop members. The project was a Hawaiian Luau for the senior
citizen residents of Little Sisters of the Poor. Many of the
residents we know by name and they have seen us grow up. It only
seemed fitting that I could share my final and biggest project for
Girl Scouts with them. Finally, I created a memorable 20-minute
DVD/CD which includes pictures, videos, and music from the event.
In the fall, I plan on attending college, majoring in public
relations and become a radio broadcaster.
Amanda R., Cecil County, MD
Project: Increasing Awareness
of the Arts.
I have been a Girl Scout for thirteen years and this is my first
year as an adult Girl Scout. I have earned my Girl Scout Silver
Award, Leader In Training, Senior Program Aide, Cadette Leadership
pin and I was a Senior Girl Scout Troop assistant. I co-lead a Daisy
troop along with my mother. I enjoy reading and playing games
on-line.
I
earned my Girl Scout Gold Award with my project entitled “Operation
Literacy.” My project was designed to alleviate the illiteracy
problem. It was even designed to give kids who could read, but not
well, extra help so that they could develop stronger reading skills.
I believe the most successful aspect of my project was working with
second graders and helping them improve their reading skills.
While a Girl Scout I was a member of the Freedom’s Answer, National
Honor Society, secretary for the Future Business Leaders of America,
managed girls’ basketball, attended the Hugh O’Brian Youth
Leadership Conference and Presidential Classroom. I also received
5th place in state competition in Word Processing II for Future
Business Leaders of America, Citizenship Award, Certificate of
Meritorious Service, Maryland Distinguished Scholar Honorable
Mention and President’s Education Award.
I am currently a first year student at the College of Notre Dame of
Maryland majoring in elementary education.
Stephanie R., Troop 127, New
Castle County, DE
Project: “Preserving the
Future”
I participated in the Marching Band, Symphonic Band, National Honor
Society, and the Tri-M Honor Society (Historian) and Prom Promise in
school. I have earned the John Philip Sousa Award, Band Educators
Award and Band Booster Award.
I have earned my Girl Scout Silver Award and have been a Girl Scout
for nine years. My Girl Scout Gold Award was done at Iron Hill
Museum and was entitled “Preserving the Future.”
For
my Girl Scout Gold Award, I made a trail guide for the trail system
at Iron Hill Museum. The trail guide will help people who visit the
museum understand more of Delaware’s natural history. I also made a
Power Point presentation for the museum to help raise funds for an
expansion which is currently underway.
In the fall, I will be attending York College of Pennsylvania to
major in business administration.
Samantha S., Troop 288, New
Castle County, DE
Project:
“Making the Community Beautiful”
I am a member of the National Honor Society and the swim team at my
school. I enjoy participating in community service. I am the
director for children’s services, volunteer for the Ministry of
Caring daycare and lead the youth group at my church. I have been a
Girl Scout for 13 years.
The
title of my Girl Scout Gold Award is “Making the Community
Beautiful.” To earn my award, I beautified the outside of the place
where I began my Girl Scout career, my church. My project not only
provides a beautiful outlet for members of the entire community
around the church, but also serves as an educational resource for
children. The signs that I made for the plants in the gardens allow
children to learn what different flowers look like as well as to
introduce children to the Latin names of the flowers.
I will be attending Ursinus College in the fall where I hope to
pursue a degree in biology, and then to attend medical school.
Daphne S., Troop 485, Kent
County, DE
Project: “School Supply Drive”
My
volunteer efforts have included mission trips, environmental
stewardship projects, church, and helping to coach youth track and
field. I am a member of the National Honor Society, and participate
in Cross Country, Track and Field, Latin Club and Photography Club.
I have been involved with Girl Scouts for the past nine years. My
Girl Scout Gold Award was entitled “School Supply Drive.”
To achieve my Girl Scout Gold Award, I compiled school supply lists
and hung up flyers in my church to obtain school supply donations
for children who were inadequately prepared for the school year. The
families I helped were so happy as were the donors. The smiles of
those I helped made my project a success.
I hope to continue my education in science and chemistry, and to one
day be an astronaut.
Samantha T., Troop 580, Queen
Anne's County, MD
Project: “Heart Start
Carnival”
I am the captain of the Varsity cheerleader squad and a member of
CBC-Elite All-Star Cheerleading Squad at school. I worked on my Girl
Scout Gold Award with another member of my troop, entitled “Heart
Start Carnival.”
The
purpose of my event was to raise money, in order to purchase an
Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for the local public library
and to provide the community public access to a life saving device.
We were able to purchase two AED’s because of our successful
Father/Daughter dance.
I plan to attend University of North Carolina at Charlotte in the
fall and to pursue a career in the medical field, and eventually
become a pediatrician.
