On the Go - Trips and Camping
As your Girl
Scouts become more confident and the leaders become comfortable,
taking a trip away from the meeting place is the logical next step.
Safety-Wise has detailed trip information in Chapter 5 that you
must review before any activity.
All forms go to your Service
Unit designated person FIRST (usually the Outdoor Consultant). She/he
will process it and determine what other information you might need to
submit.
Important:
|
1 |
Groups taking trips using a rented or charter vehicle or lasting
more than three nights MUST submit a FIELD TRIP form at least one
month in advance of the activity to ensure proper insurance
coverage and necessary documentation.
|
|
2 |
All camping
trips must submit a CAMPING APPLICATION.
|
|
3 |
For any other travel outside the meeting place you still need
to notify your designated Service team person. The important thing
is that you have followed Safety-Wise guidelines and a Service
Team member knows you are traveling should you have a mishap. |
Suggested progression of Trips:
Meeting-time trips to points of interest within the
neighborhood are the simplest and begin the progression. (Walking trips
or short car trips to the firehouse for example)
Day Trips are longer, away from the meeting place and outside
the regular meeting time. They include visiting places of interest,
bringing lunch and/or eating out.
Simple overnight trips involve one or two nights away and are
generally at a nearby camp, park, hostel, hotel or motel.
Extended overnight trips are three or more nights and cover
travel throughout the continental United States using various modes of
transportation and housing.
Wider Opportunities are events for older girls, usually as
individuals, anywhere offered.
International trips should only be planned for girls 14 and
older as such trips have special requirements, permits, passports and
other regulations. See Safety-Wise for them.
Age Level Guidelines
Daisy Girl Scouts can take day trips and overnight camping with
family members.
Brownie Girl Scouts should help plan their traveling. They may
do day trips and simple overnights at camp or other places with or
without a family member but girl/adult ratio.
Junior Girl Scouts take more responsibility for planning their
trips and can take extended trips with the girl/adult ratio of
chaperones.
Cadettes and Seniors have the most opportunity for travel. They
receive Wider Opportunity information as well as being able to plan
their own travels with their advisors. Girl/adult chaperone ratios
still apply.
Always have a permission slip signed by a parent/guardian for
any activity outside the troop meeting place in addition to the above
required paperwork.
Happy Traveling!
