Opportunities at our Camps
An important component of the scouting program is the
camp experience.
Through their time in the Girl Scout camps, girls learn to relate to
others with increasing understanding and respect, as well as to develop
a meaningful set of values to guide their actions and to provide for
sound decision-making. In camp, girls are part of a community, living
and working together, sharing projects and goals, achieving and learning
and growing strong. Girls learn to work as a team, make new friends and
meet girls from all walks of life and backgrounds. They learn to
understand and appreciate diversity and how to get along with others.
Girls learn new skills, such as leadership, problem solving and how to
be independent. All of these experiences help to build their self
confidence and shape their character.
In addition, girls find ways to contribute to their communities by
learning to use their abilities and leadership skills while working in
cooperation with others.
A
Strategic Plan was completed in 2000, which looked at all areas of
the Scouts: program, membership, communications, fund development and
properties. As a result of this plan, consultants were hired to look at
the Girl Scout camps in terms of our outdoor programming and determine
potential usage and what is required in improvements, upgrades and
renovations.
Along with the recommendations from the consultants, focus groups were
conducted with Girl Scouts and adult volunteers for advice and input
into the plans.
The Girl Scouts has a strong commitment to helping to make science an
important part of its programs and to encouraging the interest of the
girls in science at an early age. A Science Center at Camp Country
Center will provide another opportunity to expose young girls to
science, especially for the outreach girls who come to the camp. The
Center will focus on science, technology and the environment and also
will serve as a training center for Girl Scout leaders. We have visited
other Girl Scout camps that have Science Centers and they clearly
provide a new and exciting dimension to the Scout program.
The Girl Scouts own four outdoor camps, which accommodate
13,000 camp
visits by girls, ages 5 to 17. These girls come from a wide geographic
area and are representative of broad sections of our communities. In the
summer, Grove Point and Todd are resident camps and Country Center and
Sandy Pines are day camps. During the rest of the year, camps provide
for troop camping, area events and weekend outdoor programs.
“The value of camp ... It is allowing girls from all over to
meet and learn to work as a team.”
--- Girl Scout Volunteer and mother of a Teen Girl Scout
“This was my first time at camp. I learned how to swim and it felt
great. I made new friends outside of my troop.”

Some of the main projects at the camps include:
- Camp Country Center, the only camp in Delaware,
will play an important role in the outreach program to underserved
girls.
Major Projects:
Science and Technology Lodge (LEED* Certified):
Construct a new multi-purpose building for hands-on instruction in
science and technology.
Campsite Improvements:
Upgrade sanitary facilities.
(*Leadership, Energy, Environment,
Design)
- Camp Grove Point, the largest of our camps, is located on 247
scenic acres along the Sassafras River, accessible to girls from both
northern Maryland and Delaware, and serves as our primary resident camp.
With the proposed property improvements, Camp Grove Point will be able
to increase its service capacity from 7,800 to 10,200 girls per year
with high quality equestrian and waterfront programs.
Major Projects:
Equestrian Center:
Build a 3,600 square-foot barn, including stalls for 16 horses, tack
room, office, classroom, riding arena and fenced pasture.
New Shelter:
For overnight stays and resident camp.
- Camp Todd is centrally located close to the Delaware/Maryland
line. This lovely 65-acre site features its own small island. With
improvements, it will become our second licensed residential camp,
allowing the luxury of week-long programming. The special features of
Camp Todd include outdoor aquatic activities with swimming and boating
instruction.
Major Projects:
Multi-purpose Program Center:
Construct a 5,000 square foot program center for year-round use with a
kitchen and dining room, multi-purpose space and sleeping quarters with
a shower room.
Waterfront improvements:
Expand the waterfront and construct a towrope and raft to ferry campers
to the camp island.
- Camp Sandy Pines serves weekend campers at the 47 acre site and
is located in southern Maryland. The capital improvements at Camp Sandy
Pines will enhance the already beautiful environment and expand girls'
horizons. The proposed tree house cabins will be fanciful and
functional; girls can snuggle up in their sleeping bags surrounded by
the sounds of chirping birds and rustling leaves.
Major Projects:
Nature Activity Center:
Construct a 3,000 square foot multi-purpose building, including a main
room, kitchen, and shower room, serving as the gateway to new nature
trails.
Construct Tree-house Units:
Traditional sleeping units close to nature's beauty.
Thank you for your support in
providing exceptional outdoor experiences to girls throughout the
